The XII Century Augustinian Priory ruins dominate the town and are definitely worth a visit. The Priory, built in 1129, was considered by Robert de Brus to be the best in England.  The main hub of activity today, however, is Westgate, which is a cobbled, street of shops, pubs, restaurants, businesses and stalls on market day.    There is a market every Thursday and Saturday and small one on Tuesday, with specialist markets, such Farmers’ Market every second Saturday of the month and French Market comes about twice a year. Just walk around the town and enjoy the shops and markets.  If you feel energetic there is a lovely walk up to the forest from Belmangate. Go past the Anchor Inn and keep going upwards until you reach the entrance to the forest, turn right keep going and enjoy the scenery.   If you are feeling energetic keep going until you reach the peak of Highcliff for spectacular view of Guisborough and the Tees Valley. This area is accessible for cyclists with fantastic mountain bike tracks. You can also visit the Guisborough Museum from April to October (Thursday and Saturday opening) free of charge this is found on Westgate Road.   argument cottage contains a wide selection of books, games, videos and DVDs to entertain you all and has local history books and walks.   Also there is much to entertain the children whilst visiting Guisborough and surrounding areas.  At King George V playing field there is a public swimming pool, playground and tennis court.  To find this please turn left after the Globe, walk down Bolckow Street until you reach a parade of shops, turn right and walk to the end, here you will find all of the amenities detailed above.  Prior Pursglove College on Church Walk has an activity programme the Shoutabout Playscheme during the school holidays for children 5-15, with activities such as Water Sports, Art, Computing and Trips- contact the centre on 01287 280260. Day 2 guisborough The surrounding area offers much in the way of recreation. Walks and cycle rides within the Guisborough Forest and Branch Walkway activities are arranged regularly. You can walk from the top of Belmangate as stated in the previous itinerary but if you continue using the Ordinance Survey Map provided you will reach the Forest Walkway Centre, where there are many things for you to get involved with. The Children's Activity Trail is called 'Dylan and Bob's Guide to Guisborough Forest' and looks at the countryside around Guisborough Forest through the eyes of the Wardens’ Border Collie dogs who are always at the site.  The booklet guides children around a 2 mile trail which has activity points such as crosswords, games and observational activities and costs 60p. Other activities at the centre include the use of pond dipping equipment to explore the wetlands, orienteering and mountain bike trails.  For all enquiries and information telephone the centre on 01287 631132.    day 3    roseberry topping A popular walk which the children and/or you, will definitely enjoy, is Roseberry Topping. It is possible to walk there from Guisborough but an alternative is to cycle or take the bus to Stokesley (number 81) and get off at Newton Under Roseberry- about 2-3 miles away. There is a car park at the bottom near the Kings Head Hotel and from here you can make your ascent. Take plenty of water and appropriate clothing and footwear. The view from the top is spectacular, looking over the whole of the Tees Valley! Alternatively the full walk from Guisborough is detailed in the walking guide provided in the cottage and available on request. day 4    saltburn Recently seen on BBC Coast Series, Saltburn is a real jewel.  There are options for you to walk part of the Cleveland Way or take the 28 bus to Saltburn; maps again available in the cottage. The route goes from Guisborough over the hills with fabulous views of the coast and down through Skelton where you will be fascinated by the splendid Viaduct, waterfall and woodland scenery. Onwards to Saltburn and enjoy the pleasures in store.  Visit the Smugglers Museum and recall the maritime history of the town, take a ride on the Cliff Lift which is environmentally friendly and runs on water alone, walk up Cat Nab and experience the beauty of the coastline from far and wide, or if you prefer just enjoy a promenade and shop in the Victorian town centre.   You can spend hours just enjoying the beach, sea, rock pools and fresh air course weather permitting! There is also a thriving surfing community in Saltburn, with facilities to hire equipment hourly or daily for a small cost. Well worth a try or you can just watch the surfers riding the waves as they tend to be out all year round no matter what the weather! There are also a myriad beautiful local coastal villages and towns a short distance away at- Staithes, Runswick Bay, Whitby (65 bus) and Robin Hoods Bay.   day 5    whitby An hour travelling on the X56 from Westgate, next to Boots Chemists; or delightful train journey- take the 28 bus to Nunthorpe- then the train to Whitby over the moors, will take you to the ancient port of Whitby. Here you will find Arguments Yard on Church Street going towards the 199 steps, our ancestors’ home.  You can admire the statue of Captain Cook, eat in one of the many fish restaurants or White Horse and Griffin on Church Street, or simply enjoy the view from the top of the 199 steps leading to the splendid Gothic Abbey. Perhaps you can try counting them- don’t forget to visit the splendid gothic Whitby Abbey when you finally reach the top. There is a wonderful attraction here.    Any ‘Dracula’ fans will know where he made landfall in the ‘Demeter’ on Tate Hill Sands, in the form of a black dog!  Watch out for one recently spotted on Church Street……….            day 6   visit tees valley museums There are some fantastic museums in the Tees Valley, but first we will look at those ‘local’ to argument cottage.  Please walk toward the town from the cottage and turn right just before the Job Centre, when you reach the wonderful wet fish shop on the corner of Reid Terrace please turn left.  A short distance away tucked at the back of Sunnyfield House on Westgate Road, you will find Guisborough Museum. This is a local treasure and has some great memorabilia relating to the history of the town. It is open April to October on a Thursday and Saturday only and is volunteer run and free to enter.   Another great place to visit is very close. You can even walk from the town past the cemetery and onward toward Skelton until you reach Tocketts Mill and go down the very steep bank. Alternatively you can take the number 65 bus to Loftus/Whitby, from outside Boots the Chemist and ask for Tocketts Mill bus stop, this is only one mile outside of Guisborough. At Tocketts Mill you will find a working Mill, this is open on a Sunday April-September and is a wonderful location and heritage attraction, bringing to life the social history of the site.  You can buy the wholemeal flour ground at the mill on site or locally from the health food shop next to the railway station at Saltburn.  We use the flour to make bread and pastries, it is wonderful to use locally produced items for home baking!     A little further afield at Skinningrove, near Loftus is another real gem, Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum (01287) 642877.  You can take the 65 bus from Guisborough to Loftus or Whitby and get off at the Skinningrove junction. The museum is signed and just a short walk away from the bus stop. This wonderful museum allows you to experience first hand the life of an ironstone miner with a trip into the North Drift of the mine and is the only ironstone mining museum in the country.  Clearly the mining museum highlights the fundamental importance of this industry to the social and economic history of East Cleveland.  It is well worth a visit, you will need to be prepared for a trip into the cavernous ventilation spaces of the mine!   There are of course many more wonderful museums in the Borough of Redcar and Cleveland such as Kirkleatham Museum, take the bus to Redcar (no 81) and get off at Kirkleatham (01642) 479500. It contains a host of local history artefacts and displays and has regular events during the school holidays. There is also Ormesby Hall nearby, with Victorian Kitchen and splendid gardens (via no 56 bus to Middlesbrough), Zetland Lifeboat Museum in Redcar (01642) 494311 (via number 81 Bus), housing the oldest lifeboat in the country built in 1802 which saved over 500 lives, Saltburn Smugglers Heritage Centre (01287) 625252 and Winkies Castle in Marske (01642) 775086. For further information please ring the museum numbers given as times are seasonal. You can look on the website as follows: www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk (use the a-z guide to find museum service) or for the Tees Valley use www.visitteesvalley.co.uk   Day 7   visit York, Durham or Newcastle Many of the North’s greatest cities are also within one hour of Guisborough. Durham was an early centre of Christianity in Britain and its Cathedral is one of the finest medieval monuments in the world. You can easily visit the delights of Durham by purchasing a day bus ticket for £5 on the X56 Arriva bus to Middlesbrough and then taking the X1 GNE bus from stand 19 at the bus station using the same day ticket onto to Durham (a family ticket is £8 for 2 adults and up to 3 children, excellent value!). York  also has a hugely important part in world history- the Roman capital of northern Britain, the city in which the Emperor Constantine the Great declared the Empire to be Christian- its history stretches back over 2,000 years. You can easily visit York, take the X56 bus to Middlesbrough go to the train station and take an hours journey on the transpennine train onto York
