Description of accommodation: It is situated between the Ayrshire coast and the Kintyre Peninsula. The island is about 20 miles long and about 12 miles across. Castle House is a substantial edwardian villa located close to the village of Kildonan to the South of the Island. The house benefits from spectacular views across the Firth of Clyde to Pladda, Ailsa Craig and Northern Ireland on a clear day. A few minutes walk to a sandy beach, meander along the coast line to the local pub which serves locally brewed ales and whiskeys. CASTLESIDE CROFT This secluded stone-built cottage, originally a barn, emanates the atmosphere of traditional island life, without compromising modern facilities. South-facing French windows access an enjoyable well-stocked garden that incorporates Kildonan Castle, silhouetted against a stunning sea view. With private parking to the rear of the property, an entrance lobby with toilet and washing facilities opens onto a small but perfectly formed kitchen. The separate dining area accesses an extensive, comfortable lounge with a discrete space to accommodate the sofa bed. A small study/bedroom is adjacent to the living area. A further double and twin bedroom is on the first floor with a family bathroom, offering a shower/bath. The twin room has an ensuit toilet and washbasin. A footpath gives immediate access to seashore exploration and a sandy beach. The sounds, sights and smells of shore echo through the pretty village of Kildonan. With its hotel amenities, its excellent shop and its nature trails. Getting There The Isle of Arran lies two hours west of Glasgow including a 55 minute ferry crossing, which departs from the small town of Ardrossan. There's a regular train connection between Ardrossan and Glasgow Central. There's also a bus connection to/from Edinburgh, Kilmarnock and the Ayrshire Coast The main roads to use are the A71 (from the M74 motorway) towards Irvine, or the M77 from Glasgow to Kilmarnock, then the A71 westbound to the ferry terminal at Ardrossan. The main ferry route to Arran is run by Caledonian MacBryne and the car/passenger ferry makes the 55 min journey 6 times daily Mon-Sat, 4 times on Sun, with evening ferries on a Friday evening. For those looking for a leisurely tour to the Island there is a non-bookable car/passenger ferry which makes the 30-min trip 8-11 times daily leaving from Claonaig, near Skipness on the east coast of Kintyre, to Lochranza in the north of the island. This is also run by Caledonian MacBrayne and runs during the summer (Apr-Oct), less frequently in winter. An Island Hopscotch ticket allows you to journey to Brodick and leave from Lochranza or vice versa, giving you more freedom on the island. Please be aware of the need to book the Car Ferry in advance when you are booking your Arran holiday, as during summer tourist season the ferry’s get booked up.
