Castles and Palaces in the United Kingdom There are many great castles in the UK where tourists can amble through history and learn about the British Aristocracy. Tourists can also visit stately homes. There are hundreds of these in Britain that are welcoming to the public. One very popular castle is Castle Howard in North Yorkshire. The entrance to the castle is fantastic and has a dome overhead. The delightful park around the castle makes a relaxing day. The Scottish Edinburgh Castle sits elevated on a hill high above the rest of the city of Edinburgh, and gives a view of the territory of the some of the bloodiest events in Scottish history. Windsor Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world, and is also the biggest castle in England. Although the castle was badly damaged by a fire in 1992, it has been lovingly restored. For gardens, the Hever Castle and Gardens in Kent offer a brilliant landscape with a surrounding moat and a drawbridge for protection against invasion. Also in Kent is Penshurst Place, a fantastic country mansion that was formerly the home of Sir Philip Sydney, an Elizabethan poet. The baroque Blenheim Palace in Woodstock gives visitors a look at the birthplace of the british Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchhill. |
