Cotswalds Tourist Attractions

Although a lot of people have the misconception that Britain begins and ends in London and perhaps Edinburgh and Bath, there is actually a wealth of rural areas to be explored. The British countryside is a delightful place for both urban dwellers and tourists to visit and recapture the feel of a slower, simpler era. There are many beautiful cottages in the Cotswalds to hire.

The cluster of counties that are often termed the Heartland or the Heart of England will offer the best chance to really experience the countryside. Herefordshire, Worcestershire, the ‘Shakespeare Country’ around Stratford and Warwick, as well as the Costwalds are just some of the places that the interested traveller may visit.

There are many ways to enjoy the atmosphere and the ambiance of the Cotswalds, from guided tours to simply going out and exploring.

Castle combe cotswaldsCastle Combe is one of the first destinations of many tourists, as it lies close to the town of Bath. This is a smaller place than Bath, and at the top of the main street, visitors can still see the market shelter that was used in medieval times. Many who have visited here would compare it with the miniature English villages so often showcased in more popular tourist attractions.

No trip to the Cotswalds would be complete without going to Painswick, what some have dubbed “Queen of the Cotswalds”. This name is due to the town’s former prosperity during the three hundred years of the cloth industry’s activity, which can still be seen in the town’s buildings of fine gray limestone. Places to visit include the St. Mary’s Church, famous for its 99 yew trees (every time a hundredth tree is planted, it dies), and the Rococo Gardens at the town outskirts.

Bourton-on-the-Water is built almost exclusively in warm yellow Cotswold stone, this delightful village has such a unique appealbourton on the water to visitors and residents alike.
