Northumberland is a beautiful and historic county in the north east of England. It draws a lot of its income from tourism, as well it should: it has a lot to offer both the casual and dedicated traveler. In fact, Northumberland has been hailed as one of the top ten destinations in the whole of Britain. Tourism experts have found in a newspaper survey that it is indeed one of the all-time best places to visit in the country. There are many excellent cottages to rent in Northumberland, and this is one of the best ways to stay, to really get a feel for the region.
This popularity is due to three factors. One, it possesses a very beautiful and scenic landscape, untouched by urbanization or industrialization. Two, historical sites can be found aplenty, making it easy to realize the historical significance of the place. And three, it is the least populated county in England, meaning that crowding is nonexistent, and many stretches of unspoiled countryside are available to be enjoyed.
Bamburg CastleApart from the truly fresh air and open landscapes, Northumberland has a lot of visitor attractions to enjoy. Abbeys and churches point to the county’s rich Christian heritage. The Lindisfarne Heritage Center, for instance, aims to keep the culture that produced the famed Lindisfarne Gospels alive and accessible.
The arts and crafts industry in the county is also alive and well, with fields ranging from photography to bookbinding to jewelry to glassmaking and calligraphy. Many galleries and workshops can be visited and participated in for the visitor to truly appreciate the creative atmosphere of Northumberland.
Many fine and historic castles are also open to the public. Being at the border, the Border Wars of the 14th to 16th centuries has left Northumberland with more castles and fortresses than any other county. There are actual furnished castles which visitors can enter and explore, while older castles have only ruins left with visitor centers to give information to those interested in the ruins’ history.

Bamburgh Castle (see pic above) is probably the finest castle in England. It is perched on a basalt outcrop on the very edge of the North Sea at Bamburgh, Northumberland. It commands stunning views of the Farne Islands, Holy Island and land' ward to the Cheviot hills.
A family would also be able to find a wide variety of places to visit and activities to participate in, in Northumberland. Many wildlife parks and nature preserves can be found, as well as cultural and historical museums. Gardens and parks can also provide a great venue for picnics and family days out.
Great destinations include: Bamburgh Castle and the nearby Farne Islands
Seahouses and the majestic Castle of Bamburgh. This is the most famous Sea Bird Sanctuary in the British Isles and they also have a large colony of Atlantic or Grey The Farne Islands are two to three miles off the Northumberland coast between the fishing village of Seals.
